Jorge Padrón is the president of Padrón Cigars (formally Piloto Cigars Inc.), the family-owned company founded by his father, Cuban émigré José Orlando Padrón, in 1964. A Cuban-American businessman who holds an MBA, Jorge is credited with using his business acumen to grow Padrón into one of the most respected premium cigar brands in the world, known for its consistent quality and box-pressed Nicaraguan cigars.

He assumed the role of president and took over leadership following his father's death in 2017.

Family background

The Padrón family worked in tobacco in Cuba's Pinar del Río region for generations before José Orlando Padrón left Cuba after the 1959 revolution, eventually reaching Miami, where he founded Padrón Cigars in 1964 with $600 saved from carpentry work. Jorge was born into the business, spending childhood afternoons in the factory.

Leadership

Jorge graduated in 1991 and joined the company with the goal of growing what his father had built. As president he has overseen the brand's rise to the top tier of premium cigars, emphasizing unwavering quality and cautious, sustainable growth even at the cost of slower expansion. Padrón cigars have been named Cigar Aficionado's Cigar of the Year multiple times.

Products and philosophy

Padrón is known for its box-pressed shape and for ultra-premium lines such as the Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series and the Serie 1926, the latter named for José Orlando's birth year. The company ages its tobacco before rolling so cigars are ready to smoke on release, and uses security codes on bands to guard against counterfeiting. Jorge introduced the milder Dámaso line as an entry point to the portfolio.

Succession

After José Orlando Padrón died on December 5, 2017, Jorge assumed full leadership, continuing the family's control of all aspects of production from tobacco growing to distribution. The little hammer ("el martillito") his father used for early carpentry work remains a family emblem and appears on the brand.
